Doug Richards: Through a Sonic Prism
Professore da quattro decenni alla Virginia Commonwealth University, dove ha fondato il dipartimento jazz, Richards è un validissimo arrangiatore che ha privilegiato l'attività di educatore: nelle sue orchestre si sono formati decine di professionisti, anche di primo piano come Nate Smith, James Genus, Clarence Penn o Steve Wilson.
Il risultato è sorprendente nonostante l'indubbia difficoltà del materiate trattato. Tra i massimi classici della bossa nova, i temi di Jobim sono oggetti delicati: attraggono per quel particolare fascino lirico intriso di saudade, dove incantevoli melodie si svelano nella penombra, con sottili nuances.
Le orchestrazioni Richards sono fantasiose, traboccanti di soluzioni e di ricche di impasti dissonanti: ricordano a volte Gil Evans, altre ancora Stan Kenton o Pete Rugolo. Far passare i delicati temi di Jobim attraverso questo prisma sonoro può sembrare azzardato ma il risultato è in gran parte riuscito.
Ad eccezione di qualche rilettura convenzionale e un po' troppo marcata (come "A Felicidade" oppure "Samba de uma nota so") le orchestrazioni sono leggere ed eleganti, con il loro variopinto e fantasioso distendersi. La cantante Laura Ann Singh è una presenza centrale, che mette a frutto la sua lunga esperienza d'interprete nella musica brasiliana e molti solisti sono di primo piano: come i sassofonisti John Wittman, J.C. Kuhl e John Winn, il trombettista John D'Earth, i trombonisti Pete Andersone Bryan Hooten.
I brani pregevoli sono più d'uno. Sofisticate dissonanze orchestrali e ottimi assoli rendono irresistibili "Ligia," "Insensatez," "Falando de amor" e "Maditacao." Ma fresche soluzioni cromatiche rivelano anche "O grande amor," "Sabiá e "Se todos fossem iguais a você."
