È una lunga sequela di rimandi ritmici alla miglior estetica afroamericana degli anni '70, con soul-funky e brasile in primo piano. Fu inciso in un decennio dove la teorizzazione dell'africanismo musicale negli States è agli albori sia a livello di saggistica che di critica musicale. Ma credetemi, c'è più Africa qui e in altre esperienze discografiche degli Earth Wind And Fire che nella gran parte del coevo free-jazz, che in molti casi guardava più alle tecniche compositive dell'avanguardia europea che non all'eredità afroamericana.
Purtroppo l'edulcorazione a livello radiofonico e mediatico di album come Gratitude ha determinato una conoscenza superficiale della musica di Maurice White e compagni. Tutti hanno sempre canticchiato "Reasons" e "Devotion", ma quanti apprezzano e amano capolavori nascosti come "Africano/Power" e la "New World Symphony"?
