Shane Endsley and the Music Band: Then the Other

E lo chiamavano... jazz. Sì, perché in superficie, Then the Other sembra uno dei tanti album jazz che cercano di aggiornare e rinfrescare i canoni di un mainstream elegante e raffinato ("Big," il brano d'apertura, tema swingante, impasti sonori armoniosi, solismo limpido e scintillante ci conduce erroneamente verso questa tesi progettuale). Ma poi l'altro, suggerisce il titolo, molto altro aggiungiamo noi, e non poteva essere diversamente se ad accompagnare il "Kneebody" Shane Endsley troviamo personaggi come Craig Taborn, Matt Brewer e Ted Poor.

Molto altro, si diceva, perche l'album è una sorta di compendio sul modo di Endsley nell'approcciarsi alla composizione, all'improvvisazione, alle dinamiche di gruppo, relegando in tal modo in ultima fila le disquisizioni sul genere di musica proposta e suonata. Then the Other è grande musica, con grandi interpreti, punto e a capo.

Così non stupisce se "Kings County Ramble" ha cadenze quasi country & western illuminate da un assolo spiritato del leader, se "Two Parts" sembra provenire da una registrazione di musica seriale con Caig Taborn a disegnare le coordinate con il suo amato procedimento per iterazione. O se "Young Benjamin" ha il sapore di una vecchia ballad e il rispetto per gli spazi e i silenzi di certa musica contemporanea, se "House" possiede l'eleganza e il sottile senso di ricerca dei migliori lavori di casa Blue Note degli anni sessanta.

Potremmo proseguire di questo passo fino allo scoppiettante, pirotecnico finale di "Gallery Piece" ma poco importa. Quello che conta è sottolineare la maestria di Endsley nello sfruttare semplici cellule melodiche o figure ritmiche per costruire le proprie visioni e concretizzarle avendo in massima cura le sollecitazioni provenienti dai compagni di viaggio, che a loro volta diventano elementi imprescindibili nel processo creativo del leader. Then the Other lo si potrebbe definire una album di musica totale, non ce ne voglia il maestro Giorgio Gaslini, o più semplicemente un disco nel quale arrivano forti segnali su come si possa rinnovare il linguaggio dell'improvvisazione senza rinnegare il passato o rifiutare le contaminazioni.
