The Mark Lomax Trio: The State of Black America
Il dialogo a tre che scaturisce lungo questi cinque ampi temi (tutti targati Lomax) è - come si diceva - sempre onesto, solido, conseguente. Un unico brano, peraltro, "To Know God Is to Know Thy Self," è in grado di elevarsi sopra una robusta - e tutto sommato neanche così banale - routine (non necessariamente di marca post-bop), attingendo a una grumosa aleatorietà che può rimandare all'ultimo Coltrane (ma anche a certe "libertà" concessesi da Rollins in anni analoghi).
L'ascolto è peraltro quasi sempre gratificante, non soporifero o troppo scontato, per quanto certe soluzioni tematiche ("Blues for Charles" su tutto) appaiano lievemente inconsistenti, un po' abborracciate, semplice trampolino di lancio per l'improvvisazione. Che non a caso vi si posa sopra generosa e fluente.
