Vienna Art Orchestra: The Minimalism of Erik Satie
Un repertorio pianistico da una parte di incantevole ma inquieta leggerezza; dall'altra di scura, mistica drammaticità. E una lucidità filosofica che ha precorso i tempi, quanto meno nell'indicare la funzionalità del suono nella società postindustriale.
Anche la Vienna Art Orchestra, in queste sue riflessioni su Satie, che risalgono al 1983-84, ha anticipato di un bel po' la fortuna che Uri Caine ha saputo trovarsi maneggiando con arguzia gli autori classici europei.
The Minimalism of Erik Satie aveva a suo tempo acceso passioni critiche. La hatOLOGY lo ristampa e riascoltato oggi, al di là di una innegabile fattura tecnica, non vibra di particolari emozioni. L'organico di Mathias Rüegg amplia l'intelaiatura melodica delle composizioni originali vivacizzandone il metro, trasformandone ovviamente il suono con le vocalità e gli espressionismi del jazz; eppure qualcosa non funziona nell'alchimia con i colori di Satie.
Accanto a capitoli di innegabile sapienza (i brani 3 e 4), le riflessioni sui vari "Gnossienne" sono insoddisfacenti, specie il travestimento arabeggiante del "No. 1". Così come appaiono fuori misura gli interventi vocali di Lauren Newton, ad esempio sulla "Vexations 1611".
La pagina più lunga (ventitre minuti), focalizzata su un'altra versione di "Vexations" è invece azzeccata: il vibrafono di Woody Schabata e il clarinetto basso di Wolfgang Puschnig restituiscono con nitore e intelligenza il vagabondare scettico e le meditazioni calme che Satie aveva offerto come critica della musica concettuale.
