Aubrey Johnson: The Lively Air

Dopo il notevole debutto di Unraveled (Outside in Music, 2020), penalizzato nella diffusione dalla tempesta pandemica, Aubrey Johnson ritorna alla testa di un proprio ensemble, in cui va oltre il ruolo di cantante accompagnata ma è parte integrante delle dinamiche strumentali, nonché autrice di metà del repertorio.

Dal passato organico ritroviamo solo il violinista Tomoko Omura che è anche autrice e arrangiatrice di un brano. Aubrey Johnson è un soprano di eccelse doti tecniche ed espressive, le cui acrobatiche doti vocali sono solo un aspetto del suo stile: sa essere coinvolgente come cantante tradizionale (dal timbro suadente e dall'intimo appeal di una Joni Mitchell) ma impressiona nel ruolo di esuberante e immaginifica vocalist, dalla ricca varietà cromatica e fantasiosa veemenza.  

Quest'album nasce da un finanziamento della Chamber Music America ed è co-prodotto da Steve Rodby, il bassista del Pat Metheny Group con Lyle Mays. Il compianto tastierista era anche l'affettuoso zio di Aubrey e questo spiega l'inclusione nel disco di sue composizioni, il virtuosistico "Chorinho" e il nostalgico "Quem É Você (Close to Home)" che Aubrey ama particolarmente (lo ha già inciso in Play Favorites (Sunnyside Records, 2022), il duo con Randy Ingram).

Passando al disco, il brano d'apertura "Hope" introduce già la fragranza del prosieguo: dopo una melodiosa introduzione cantata, nascono esuberanti dinamiche ritmiche a sostenere il bell'intervento di Alex LoRe al contralto e lo scat singing di Aubrey, che chiude ridisegnando il tema base. Il percorso successivo è vario e coinvolgente. Spiccano la fantasiosa reinterpretazione di "Help Me" di Joni Mitchell, che aggiunge nuove nuances al brano. Ed ancora l'intenso duo voce/contrabbasso in "The Waking"; "l'elettrizzante "For Luna," caratterizzato dalla variopinta integrazione voce/collettivo e dagli interventi di Lo Re e McCarthy. "Chorinho" non è solo una prova di bravura: inizia con un lungo e velocissimo unisono piano/voce per svilupparsi  in una swingante sequenza contenente un bell'assolo di violino e un altro intervento vocale in scat.
