Non fatevi ingannare dalle polifonie che emergono da The Heavens: the Athesit Gospel Trombone Album. Nessuna reincarnazione della Lester Bowie's Brass Band, semplicemente un album registrato in solitaria nel proprio studio domestico da Jacob Garchick. Che utilizzando la tecnica della sovra-incisione di parti per trombone, sousaphone, corno baritono, corno contralto e tromba a coulisse arriva a produrre una massa sonora di tredici strumenti contemporaneamente. Il risultato è impressionante, una mini-suite di nemmeno mezz'ora nella quale Garchik riversa con ricchezza espressiva il proprio amore verso il gospel e la musica religiosa in generale.

Ma con un approccio che privilegia la forza della ragione e del pensiero, piuttosto che facili sentimentalismi od orgiastiche visioni. L'esperienza di arrangiatore per alcuni lavori del Kronos Quartet (Floodplain e Rainbow) viene in qualche modo trasferita in The Heavens che risulta un vero e proprio album orchestrale sorretto da una rigorosa organizzazione formale.

Non solo gospel, ma anche blues, soul, country si fondono con naturalezza in un esperanto musicale che la sensibilità jazzistica di Garchik rende accessibile fin dal primo ascolto, trasmettendo, insieme al piacere dell'ascolto, il gusto della scoperta.
