David Bond Quintet: The Early Show (Live at Twins Jazz)

Per gli appassionati delle registrazioni dal vivo arriva la nuova serie della etichetta CIMP di Bob Rusch. "It's fun", come dice nelle note di copertina il pianista Bob Butta, per cui non resta che farsi coinvolgere, mettendo da parte il fatto che non sempre le registrazioni dal vivo sono dei capolavori in termini musicali ed accettando quello che è stato definito come "il bello della diretta".

David Bond è un sassofonista dalla voce originale nell'area free: al sax soprano e contralto la sua voce così aperta ci rimanda indietro a Sidney Bechet e Johnny Hodges, a musicisti della tradizione precedente al bop (così come aveva fatto Roswell Rudd per quanto riguarda il trombone) mentre l'altro fiato sul palco, il sassofonista tenore Andrew White è più palesemente coltraniano. Una coppia eterogenea, che si diverte a fare un free basato sulla semplicità strutturale, quasi "ruspante", divertente, in cui ci sono pure momenti che sembrano uscire fuori da musicisti dixieland trovatasi a suonare nella jam sbagliata.

L'energia riversata è tanta, durante 4 ore di lavoro sul palco, da cui poi sono stati scelti i momenti migliori. Fra assoli mozzafiato e collettivi free la musica trova ogni tanto il tempo di svilupparsi in maniera piú rilassata concedendo un pò di respiro agli ascoltatori, pure loro parte della lunga session.
