David Liebman: The Distance Runner
Certo, Liebman rimane fedele alla propria poetica, com’è giusto che sia, non solo imbracciando a più riprese anche il tenore e, in una bellissima traccia (“Mother; Father”), anche il flauto di legno, ma anche modulando a suo modo le sonorità del soprano, così lontane da quelle di Lacy. Tuttavia, questo sofisticato e sfaccettato lavoro è comunque un omaggio al maestro scomparso, che compare qua e là in numerosi momenti, nell’uso dei sovracuti o nella rarefazione delle atmosfere.
Il programma alterna momenti lirici e sospesi, come la traccia iniziale, ad altri più muscolari e materici (“Colors”, che unisce in una suite tre brani altrove proposti separatamente) o virtuosistici (“The Tree”, forse quello più vicino al Lacy degli anni ’70), e a due altre dediche a maestri come Sidney Bechet (una rarefatta “Petite Fleur”) e John Coltrane (un’aggiornata “Peace on Heart”, simbolica conclusione di un concerto ricco di memoria).
Ma forse il pezzo più bello di un eccellente programma è il lungo “Time Immemorial: Before, Then, Now, After”. Evocativamente costruito sopra una base registrata, il brano ha un respiro quasi sinfonico - a dispetto d’essere condotto in solitudine - e alterna con sapienza e suggestione tenore e soprano, corposità e rarefazione, intensità improvvisativa e lirismo. Un brano splendido, che nella struttura ricorda ancora una volta certe sperimentazioni del Lacy parigino del periodo Saravah, sebbene più composto, ma che da solo racchiude l’eredità dei maestri omaggiati negli altri brani, sunteggiati nella originale lezione di Liebman.
