Grammy-Winning Saxophonist Tivon Pennicott’ Releases Soaring New Album
Imagine a diary with no words. Inspired by saxophonist Tivon Pennicott’s experiences from relocating to New York City in late 2009, Lover of Nature is exactly that; each composition is a soundtrack to a day in the life, a cinematic overview of what was. Given that there are no lyrics, the music is open to interpretation ...
Hypercolor: Hypercolor
by Dave Wayne
The past few months have seen a stream of truly--and in some cases mind-bogglingly--wonderful guitar-centric power trio albums. Yet, the eponymous debut of the Brooklyn-based avant-jazz-rock band Hypercolor stands out, but not for the reasons you'd think. Sure, the trio consists of musical brainiacs James Ilgenfritz and Lukas Ligeti; genre omnivores whose own work and collaborations ...

Fred Hersch Trio: Floating
by Maurizio Zerbo
Interview: Saxophonist/Composer Tivon Pennicott
Having played on two Grammy-winning albums, it was just a matter of time for saxophonist/composer Tivon Pennicott to explore his own artistry. With his band Sound Quartet, Pennicott has just released Lover of Nature, an album of sleek, sprightly jazz compositions that boldly showcases a brilliant new talent. In this interview, Pennicott discusses his musical origins ...
Uncommon jazz trio is spellbinding
There is a notable, and rather robust, roster of jazz-playing siblings through the years. A much leaner list of identical twins playing jazz shows that most play different instruments. That makes sense. If you are working together a lot as budding musicians, you need a variety of position players in a band. Peter and Will Anderson ...
Duane Eubanks: Artistry of a Boundless Nature
by Nicholas F. Mondello
Duane Eubanks may be the youngest of the incredibly musically-blessed Eubanks siblings, however this outstanding Philly-born trumpeter and composer also carries the bedrock jazz tradition of the City of Brotherly Love with “Rocky"-like vigor. With his latest quintet offering Things of That Particular Nature--one long overdue due to his constant in-demand status as a sideman contributor ...
Institute of Jazz Studies Executive Director Job Opening
Quick: where is the largest, most comprehensive jazz archive and research center in the world? New Orleans? St. Louis? Kansas City? Try another river city farther east. Would you believe Newark, New Jersey? It's true. On a hill above the prosaic Passaic River, where it has been housed at Rutgers University—Newark (RU-N) for nearly 50 years, ...
