The Led Zeppelin Papers: Presence, Deluxe Edition
by C. Michael Bailey
By 1976, the monolithic machinery of Led Zeppelin was running entirely on fumes, adrenaline, and fractured bones. Recorded in a frantic eighteen-day blitz while Robert Plant was confined to a wheelchair, Presence is often chronicled as Jimmy Page's last stand of pure guitar orchestration. Yet, when considering the wider oeuvre of Led Zeppelin, two ...
Brad Whiteley: Presence
by Mike Jurkovic
It's not stretching the imagination to wonder where and how New York City fits the myriad of excellent jazz players who call the city home. They come, gratefully, from everywhere, bringing with them fresh ideas, odd twists on the tried and true and a creative energy that lights this most fertile diaspora. Making comparisons ...

Pianist Brad Whiteley has had a lot of varied experiences in his career. He has played with rock artists like Regina Spektor and David Byrne and improvisers like Dave Liebman and Cameron Mizell. John Petrucelli: Presence
by Mike Jurkovic
Call it what? Jazz-op? Jazzical? Silly names aside, histories of jazz and classical music are littered with failed attempts. Saxophonist John Petrucelli, an instructor at Carnegie Mellon University and student of jazz history, astronomy and philosophy, takes the lessons in and presents us with Presence. This ambitious and rewarding album successfully melds an up-for-it jazz quintet ...
John Petrucelli: Presence
by Patrick Burnette
Tenor-saxophonist John Petrucelli's Presence is an ambitious sprawl of an album. Petrucelli features a jazz quintet (with piano, bass, guitar and drums) together with a string quartet, then gives his tunes titles like “Field of Heaven," “Garden of Angels," and “Scallop Shell of Quiet," as if to warn the listener that the album carries more conceptual ...
Orrin Evans: Presence
by Mike Jurkovic
You have to wonder how many outlets a restless creative like hard bopping pianist Orrin Evans needs to fully express himself. Twenty-five or so albums into a legacy that finds him as the newest member of The Bad Plus after years of riffing and ripping it up with The Mingus Big Band, experimenting with soul/jazz Luv ...
John Petrucelli: Presence

The sophomore effort from saxophonist John Petrucelli is a fresh and timely release of original compositions that were recorded in 2017 at the New Hazlett Theatre in Pittsburgh. The forthcoming album, titled Presence, pairs a jazz quintet with a string quartet as they perform John's majestic ten-movement suite. The album also features a guest appearance from ...
