Stan Kenton and His Orchestra: In a Lighter Vein
by Jack Bowers
Stan Kenton was a man of many moods, as was his intrepid and popular orchestra, which endured until his passing in August 1979 and whose renown is kept alive even today by the Stan Kenton Legacy Orchestra. Kenton dons his carefree hat on In a Lighter Vein, an assortment of straight-ahead themes from the orchestra's jazz ...
Jay Leonhart: Joy
by Angelo Leonardi
Rudresh Mahanthappa: Hero Trio
by Jerome Wilson
Alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa previously espoused his love of Charlie Parker on his album Bird Calls (ACT, 2015). Here he expands on that to pay tribute to, not only Parker, but other influences such as Ornette Coleman, Johnny Cash, and Keith Jarrett. Mahanthappa leads a freewheeling trio, with Francois Moutin on bass and Rudy ...
Michael Cox: Compassion
by Mark Corroto
Compassion by saxophonist Michael Cox evokes thoughts of sausages. Specifically, how they're made and for what purpose. Think about it, have you ever had an unforgettable hot dog? No. Even if you ate one at the World Series, you could never call it memorable. That wasn't its objective. So, let's talk of cured meats. The luxury ...

To Be Continued (Carol Liebowitz, Claire de Brunner, Daniel Carter, and Kevin Norton): Poetry from the Future
by Roger Farbey
This leaderless improvising quartet utilises some unusual instruments on their recording. Bassoon is rarely heard outside of classical music and Claire de Brunner is an excellent exponent of the instrument. She studied jazz improvisation with Lee Konitz. She also studied with pianist Connie Crothers as did Carol Liebowitz, whose restrained yet vital contributions are nearly as ...
Samo Salamon: 2Alto
by Jakob Baekgaard
2014 has already been a productive year for Slovenian guitarist Samo Salamon. Earlier this year, Salamon released the ambitious Orchestrology where he recorded with strings and now comes an album with focus on the sound of alto saxophones. 2Alto finds the guitarist in the familiar company of drummer Roberto Dani, who also played ...
Notable & Nearly Missed in 2013
by C. Michael Bailey
More music is released each year than can be realistically followed by a given writer. I typically listen to much more music than I write about, not because this music is not worthy somehow but there is so little time. So, this year, I am going to write a “Notable & Nearly Missed" column to catch ...
