Eugene Chadbourne

Eugene Chadbourne (January 4, 1951 in Mount Vernon, New York) is a USA composer, improvisor, guitarist and banjoist. He has also been a reviewer for the All Music Guide (AMG), and a contributor to Maximum RocknRoll. Chadbourne started out playing rock and roll guitar, but quickly grew bored with the form's conventions. He started studying other genres, including blues, country, bluegrass, free jazz, and noise - eventually synthesizing all those heterogeneous influences into a unique style of his own. He was also influenced early on by the experimental stylings of Captain Beefheart and the Mothers of Invention. He is also known as the inventor of the electric rake
John Pietaro's "Test" Of 2020

It would be a fool's errand in a covid-damaged society to attempt a peaceably gathered year's end Best of" list, in jazz or any other genre or medium. But artists of jazz and all avant gardes have been especially susceptible to the considerable financial ebbing and health concerns of this period. Discussing this concept with my ...
Heavy Rotation For A Pandemic Summer

In the summer of 2020 one result of the COVID-19 isolation, and artists inability to tour and perform is that they have time to deal with projects halted by this pandemic. Musicians, producers, and engineers have mixed, mastered and released an abundance of music. Many of the titles have been, and will be covered by our ...
Bruce Ackley / Fred Frith / Henry Kaiser / Aram Shelton: Unexpected Twins

Sometimes looking back can be a cause of regret, but it can sometimes inspire. Happily the latter is the case with Unexpected Twins by the doubled instrumentation of guitarists Henry Kaiser and Fred Frith and saxophonists Bruce Ackley and Aram Shelton. The original Twins emerged from the early free improvisation scene in North America in 1977, ...
Flavio Zanuttini Opacipapa: Born Baby Born

Monk? Sharp!

Henry Kaiser: Friends & Heroes: Guitar Duets

There a real Smörgåsbord of pieces on Henry Kaiser's Friends & Heroes: Guitar Duets. They are stylistically varied improvisational vignettes ranging from the eccentric Three Languages" with Fred Frith to the heavy electric blues of A Mighty Fire" with Knut Reiersrud. There's also prog(-ish) rock on Harmony Jam" with Nels Cline and there's a kind of ...
Tania Chen, Henry Kaiser, Wadada Leo Smith, William Winant: Ocean of Storms

In between stints as a videographer of below-ice underwater regions in Antarctica, guitarist Henry Kaiser maintains a remarkably busy agenda as an improvising musician. Here he's joined by Wadada Leo Smith, an occasional partner going back to their mutual connection with Eugene Chadbourne in the 1970s and later collaboration on their Yo Miles! album from 1998. ...
