Read "Alexander Von Schlippenbach, Dag Magnus Narvesen and More" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

There are several new albums sampled in this episode, beginning with a pair of bands from Toronto--bassist Pete Johnston's See Through 4 which features pianist Marilyn Lerner, and drummer Ernesto Cervini's quartet. Avant-garde collaborators Alexander Von Schlippenbach and Dag Magnus Narvesen reunited for another duo session of very out-there explorations on Liminal Field. Revisiting his past ...

Ernesto Cervini: Tetrahedron

Read "Tetrahedron" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

Toronto-based drummer Ernesto Cervini juggles a lot of ensembles: the Turboprop sextet, a pair of co-led trios, MEM 3 and Myriad3, and chordless trio Tunetown. Add to that another trio, Tetrahedron, offing up an eponymous debut with guitarist Nir Felder and his Fender Stratocaster sitting in to add some electric chording to the mix, electric bassist ...

Read "There From Here" reviewed by Friedrich Kunzmann

Drummer Ernesto Cervini is making a name for himself as a consummate bandleader and in-demand sideman. Time Out New York encapsulated Cervini as “a buoyant drummer as well as a sharp composer,” while the jazz bible, Downbeat, described his fluid style as one that “exemplifies `float like a butterfly, sting like a bee’.” The drummer released Abundance, his sixth album as a leader in October, 2018. Modern Drummer magazine said: “Cervini recalls such old-schoolers as Art Blakey and Billy Higgins. . . It’s his robust, magnetic personality that fascinates consistently.” Born in Toronto in 1982, Cervini graduated from Canada’s Royal Conservatory of Music with degrees in classical piano and clarinet performance before focusing his energies behind the drum kit

Myriad3: Vera

Read "Vera" reviewed by Jerome Wilson

The number of contemporary jazz piano trios that take their inspiration from non-jazz sources seems to grow all the time. To a list that includes The Bad Plus, Phronesis, and E.S.T. add the Canadian group Myriad3 which draws from concepts in classical music and progressive rock. They often begin their pieces with one repeated figure and ...
