Dr Sax

"Music to move you, body and soul". Inspired by the energy, passion and free expression found in the writing of Jack Kerouac, Dr Sax borrowed the name from one of his books and set about creating their own unique blend of Jazz, Rock, Soul & Latin. “You guys rock!” was the review posted after the band performance at the Glastonbury Festival 2002 and six years and two albums later the band are still rocking, now with guitarist Cliff Moore (younger brother of blues legend Gary Moore) playing in the band. For the 2009 4th album, 'Take It to the Bridge' there are new singers too: Steve Williams, who has been playing keyboards with the band from the beginning (he also plays keys for Jamelia) delivers two awesome vocal performances as does new guest vocalist 18 year old Sarah Davies who has taken over the chair from Beth Rowley, who herself, was last seen singing with Bert Bacharach at the BBC Proms(!)

Fran Clark

Singer-songwriter, Fran Clark, grew up in a music loving family and from an early age was exposed to diverse styles; from Aretha to Jimi Hendrix and from Ray Charles to Stevie Wonder. Diversity being the order of the day, a teenage Fran experimented both vocally and as a songwriter whilst performing with soul, rock, pop and blues musicians. It was her father’s love for Nat King Cole that led her to explore singers such as Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan and further, the compositions of Gershwin, Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart. As for contemporary heroes, she will name Stevie Wonder and Anita Baker as her favourite singer-songwriters, with Dianne Reeves recognized as her all-time heroine as a vocalist. Her professional singing career has been spent performing live on stage both at home and abroad

Evan Parker

Born:

Evan Parker was born in Bristol in 1944 and began to play the saxophone at the age of 14. Initially he played alto and was an admirer of Paul Desmond; by 1960 he had switched to tenor and soprano, following the example of John Coltrane, a major influence who, he would later say, determined "my choice of everything". In 1962 he went to Birmingham University to study botany but a trip to New York, where he heard the Cecil Taylor trio (with Jimmy Lyons and Sunny Murray), prompted a change of mind. What he heard was "music of a strength and intensity to mark me for life ... l came back with my academic ambitions in tatters and a desperate dream of a life playing that kind of music - 'free jazz' they called it then." Parker stayed in Birmingham for a time, often playing with pianist Howard Riley

John Morton

My first instrument is a 1979 Wal fretless strung with with 20-year-old half-rounds, held together with string and chewing-gum; my second, an unhygenically filthy 1979 fretted Music Man strung with slightly newer roundwounds; my third, a rather more recent (sadly) and cleaner (also sadly) Fender Precision, set up according to the James Jamerson prescription with LaBella flatwounds and a chunk of foam under the pickup cover. I use Eden amplification. I hate effects, though I do use a Mu-tron with the Music Man if things are heading in that direction. Can't read/won't read - so I improvise a lot

Waldo's Gift: Capturing the Moment

Read "Waldo's Gift: Capturing the Moment" reviewed by Luke Seabright

If you were to somehow draw a map of the UK along cultural rather than demographic lines, suddenly jny: London wouldn't be so disproportionately large.
