John Raymond: Strength & Song

Con la benedizione e la produzione di Jon Faddis il giovane trombettista John Raymond debutta come leader con Strenght & Song, titolo che fa riferimento ad un versetto del profeta Isaia riportato all'interno del CD cartonato. La dimensione religiosa ritorna più volte nel corso dell'ora abbondante di musica ma come riflessione esistenziale più che come approccio musicale. Assenti afflati spirituali o misticheggianti, bandita la concitazione delle funzioni religiose, o la spiritualità del gospel, Strenght & Song è modern jazz tout court, con più di una contaminazione, qualche ritmo, binario qua e là, qualche influenza da pop song, l'immancabile ballad, tutto ampiamente all'intero di confini ben definiti.

L'ascoltatore intraprende un viaggio confortevole nel quale non è prevista nessuna escursione fuori porta, nessuna deviazione dal percorso stabilito, cosicché il paesaggio lentamente ma inesorabilmente perde d'interesse. La tromba del leader ha certamente personalità, oltre che un suono distintivo sia nei toni medi che negli acuti e i compagni di viaggio assicurano adeguato sostegno, ma la musica scorre eccessivamente prevedibile. Non a caso l'episodio più riuscito risulta essere "Isotope," splendida composizione di Joe Henderson nella quale la tromba di Raymond dimostra di saper interpretare con maestria le linee oblique e asimmetriche del grande sassofonista scomparso nell'ormai lontano 2001.
