Peppe Merolla: Stick with Me
Delizioso il brano d'apertura "Naples," tutto giocato tra il ritmo africaneggiante impostato da Merolla e l'intreccio melodico dei fiati; non da meno "Ferris Wheel," pezzo dall'alto grado di ballabilità firmato - come del resto altri quattro brani in scaletta dei nove in scaletta - da John Farnsworth, tenorsassofonista in grado di svolgere con merito il ruolo di primo piano, soprattutto negli up-tempo.
La band si muove con disinvoltura in un repertorio che propone alcune divagazioni dal sapore latin ("Marbella"), la rilettura intensa del classico "Crazy" di Willie Nelson, qui arrangiato da Jim Rotondi, in un contesto generale catalogabile come hard-bop, mentre il leader, pur tecnicamente dotato, si ritaglia pochissimi angoli in solitudine.
Stick with Me è un disco ben suonato e che tiene compagnia per un'ora di jazz piacevole, anche se gli si può rimproverare una certa mancanza di originalità.
