Spinifex, Angelica Sanchez / Camila Nebbia Duo, & Rob Mazurek

The unpredictable but always powerful Dutch sextet, Spinifex, is releasing its latest album in North America, Undrilling The Hole, so it will be interesting to see if the band gains some traction in North America. Hopefully it will; they're a no-prisoners-taken ensemble. Brooklyn's I-Beam was the venue for a most interesting and perhaps inevitable hook-up for pianist Angelica Sanchez and Argentinean saxophonist Camila Nebbia. A brilliant duet album was the result. Rob Mazurek's multi-dimensional world was on full display at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, with a resulting album, his new Live At The Adler Planetarium, that is quintessential Exploding Star Orchestra sounds. Also new in this edition, Vancouver's premier avant-garde cellist, Peggy Lee, hooked up with her frequent playing partner guitarist Cole Schmidt and other premium members of the Vancouver scene for an intriguing album called Forever Stories of: Moving Parties. There's lots more interesting new music for you as usual, including The Bad Plus, Mosaic Quartet, Chicago's Hearts & Minds Trio in a Sun Ra mood, new saxophone driven albums by Rich Halley and a pair from England by the AuB quartet and Mike Chillingworth, and a track from Wadada Leo Smith's Ten Freedom Summers, recently named the top release in all genres for the 21st century.
