Myra Melford: Snowy Egret

Snowy Egret fa parte di un ampio e ambizioso progetto articolato in immagini, performance di danza, recitazione e musica, denominato Language of Dreams e ispirato a "Memory of Fire" trilogia sulla storia delle Americhe dell'autore uruguaiano Eduardo Galeano. In linea con l'estetica della pianista di Chicago la musica di Snowy Egret risulta sofisticata, rigorosa nelle sue geometrie, articolata nello sviluppo, complessa nei significati, percepibile a più livelli ma con una linea comunicativa più diretta e immediata che la rendono maggiormente accessibile rispetto ad altre sue testimonianze discografiche.

Indispensabile poter contare su musicisti dalla forte personalità ma altresì capaci di mettersi al servizio delle idee della leader e così ecco servita una "band da sogno" come l'ha definita la stessa Myra Melford. Tyshawn Sorey e la sua batteria sono gioia per le orecchie, cantabilità e invenzioni poliritmiche si fondono a meraviglia; la cornetta di Ron Miles è carica di storia, non spreca una nota e riverbera di luce soffusa. La chitarra di Liberty Ellman è secca, essenziale, lievemente dissonante e, quando meno te lo aspetti, si inventa romantica, malinconica.

La chitarra basso di Stomu Takeishi, depurata dall'arsenale elettronico che solitamente l'accompagna, risulta inaspettatamente il vero propulsore melodico del gruppo, collante indispensabile per le dinamiche della registrazione. Su tutti, ma senza essere invasiva o predominante, Myra Melford. Il pianoforte si insinua con dolcezza tra le trame mobili della scrittura, è seducente e nello stesso tempo affilato come una lama di rasoio, il controllo delle dinamiche del quintetto ferreo e stimolante, il senso del tempo e dello spazio sempre proiettato verso orizzonti mobili.

Il contenuto di Snowy Egret è talmente efficace e incisivo che funziona anche come opera autonoma e organicamente compiuta ma qualche passaggio, qualche indizio, qualche momento di sospensione lasciano intuire le meraviglie nascoste nel progetto originale.
