Jackson Potter: small things
When musicians who are both skilled at their craft and passionate about what they play come together, it translates clearly into their music. Such is the case with Jackson Potter's sophomore release, Small Things. This is an engaging and well-crafted collection that highlights his compositional skills along with his fluency in contemporary jazz guitar. With a sound that captures the lyrical fluidity of Jim Hall and the swinging clarity of Herb Ellis, Potter strikes a compelling balance between tradition and modernity. Backed by a quartet of talented players—tenor saxophonist Troy Roberts, trumpeter Alex Ridout, bassist Hamish Smith, and drummer Marcello Cardillo—Potter delivers a set that is both accessible and musically rich.

The album opens with Troy Roberts's composition, "Trams," an energetic and shifting piece that accentuates the group's cohesion. Here, Potter also establishes his clean articulation and melodic sensibility, qualities that resonate throughout the album. The title track, "Small Things," introduces a more ethereal touch, featuring Jaleel Shaw's alto saxophone and Sophia Formella's expressive, wordless vocals. Unlike traditional scat singing, Formella's approach evokes something closer to Pink Floyd's "The Great Gig in the Sky," adding an atmospheric and emotional dimension to the piece. Potter's compositional strengths shine throughout the album, blending straight-ahead swing with contemporary phrasing.

Potter also demonstrates a knack for interpreting others' compositions. His introspective take on Jerome Kern's "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" gives the song a renewed sense of vitality, showcasing his sensitive touch and soulful phrasing. Meanwhile, Victor Lewis's "Hey, It's Me You're Talking To" finds the band in high gear, featuring dynamic horn interplay and Potter's powerful soloing. The group also brings a light, effervescent swing to Dave Brubeck's "The Duke," a track that highlights their tight ensemble chemistry.

Closing with the graceful "Sophia's Waltz," Potter reinforces his gift for melody, crafting a piece that blends intimate expression with exceptional technique. Throughout the album, his guitar work remains the focal point—elegant, emotive, and rooted in a deep respect for the jazz tradition.

With Small Things, Jackson Potter takes a significant step forward, refining his artistic voice while surrounding himself with musicians who elevate his vision. The album's seamless blend of originals and well-chosen covers makes for a rewarding listen that invites appreciation of both the broad strokes and the subtle details that give the music its depth.
