Sky & Country resta comunque un gran disco per la bellezza delle composizioni - tutti e tre i musicisti vi contribuiscono -, per il perfetto interplay - pur non essendo un trio stabile in senso assoluto Turner, Granadier e Ballard hanno collaborato e collaborano a più riprese in varie situazioni -, e per la particolarità dell'approccio musicale di Turner.
Che è sassofonista assolutamente atipico. Perché si può considerare tra i pochi discepoli attuali del movimento definito cool jazz, ha Wayne Marsh come padre spirituale, trasferisce sul tenore le sonorità tipiche del contralto o addirittura del soprano senza la minima sbavatura anche nei registri altissimi, suona con una souplesse disarmante in qualsiasi situazione, e...
E improvvisa con una libertà impensabile in un musicista comunque ben ancorato alla tradizione della musica afroamericana. Le sue linee sono sinuose e oblique, sembrano fuggire da un centro definito e da direzioni obbligate, galleggiano eteree in uno spazio metafisico che Ballard e Granadier accendono ritmicamente in maniera impeccabile.
Sky & Country ha qualcosa che richiama il Jimmy Giuffre di 1961 o di Free Fall e, in un periodo di produzioni super trasversali, super contaminate, urlate, aggressive, trovare un incisione dove regna una calma apparente, un "caos calmo" per niente accomodante, non può che essere un regalo prezioso.
