Il nome di Chris Cheek ricorre in più di ottanta album a conferma del suo riconosciuto ruolo di "musician for musicians." I dischi da leader sono in netta minoranza e la sua ultima registrazione in questa veste risale al lontano 2005 (Blues Cruise -Fresh Sound New Talent). Peccato perché le sue doti di band leader, di ottimo compositore e ispirato organizzatore di suoni (la lunga permanenza nella seminale Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band è un bel biglietto da visita), trapelate nelle precedenti registrazioni emergono con prepotenza in questa sua ultima fatica discografica.

La componente elettrica gioca un ruolo fondamentale, l'interazione tra la chitarra di Steve Cardenas, la pedal steel guitar di David Soler e il basso di Jaume Llombard dà vita a momenti irresistibili, la batteria di Jorge Rossy (ispirato anche alla marimba) assicura una camaleontica propulsione mentre il sax del leader disegna con la consueta nonchalance traiettorie limpide e coinvolgenti.

Il quintetto in questione suona come la band della porta accanto, fa sognare con languide ballad , trasporta in mondi lontani con sonorità esotiche, fa ballare con ritmi scatenati e divertire con calembour timbrici e ritmici, insomma mette di buon umore. Vi è un sacco di energia in Saturday Songs , incanalata mirabilmente in dodici brani (tutti a firma Cheek tranne "Forever Green" di Jobim) dalla presa immediata, di perfetta architettura e con un motto in comune: fun, fun fun!
