Non hanno bisogno di presentazioni particolari, Matthew Shipp e Sabir Mateen, che il pubblico italiano ha imparato a conoscere in questi anni come due tra i più originali e generosi esponenti della scena creativa nera newyorkese, sia nei tanti progetti che gravitano intorno a William Parker, che con i rispettivi gruppi.

Questo lavoro li vede duettare in una lunga suite improvvisata per piano e clarinetto [Mateen rinuncia qui al suo naturale multistrumentismo per concentrarsi su un suono che trova empatie istintive con il legno del pianoforte], un lavoro che procede per architetture interne multiple e intrecciate, facendo risaltare di volta in volta le dinamiche più liriche o i momenti più ritmico/testurali.

Chi conosce il linguaggio dei due musicisti non faticherà a ritrovare anche nelle otto parti di questo SaMa le caratteristiche che li rendono subito riconoscibili: la percussività e la spazialità del suono del pianoforte di Shipp, così come il sensuale ricercare di Mateen, il cui gesto sperimentale non è mai mosso verso astrazioni concettuali, ma si connette con semplicità all'urgenza del corpo sonoro. Un dialogo all'altezza delle aspettative, ricco di idee e di voglia di condividerle.
