Romano Pratesi, Daniel Humair, Ares Tavolazzi, David Liebman, Adam Nussbaum: Rubber Band Live

Dalla solida base del trio che da anni Romano Pratesi ha costituito con Ares Tavolazzi e Daniel Humair nasce questo quartetto privo di strumento armonico, ripreso dal vivo il 16 e 17 giugno del 2009 durante due festival (Villa Celimontana a Roma e Montalcino Jazz & Wine). Adam Nussbaum sostituisce il batterista franco-svizzero in cinque brani.

La cifra espressa dal quartetto è quella di un jazz moderno connotato da grande libertà espressiva ("Free Ballad" è un'improvvisazione collettiva) e radici ben piantate nella complessa musica degli anni Sessanta (ben tre gli omaggi a figure carismatiche come Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane e Don Cherry) alla quale tutti i protagonisti sono debitori e di cui Liebman è stato ed è tuttora uno dei più rappresentativi eredi. Completano il programma, rispettandone le atmosfere, due brani del sassofonista statunitense e tre di Pratesi.

La presenza di Liebman si fa chiaramente sentire e caratterizza il lavoro, che—da buon live—ha tracce piuttosto lunghe—a parte due casi tutte oltre i sette minuti—che lasciano spazio agli assolo: oltre a quelli di Liebman, come sempre strepitoso e inconfondibile al soprano, anche Pratesi mostra espressività e originalità, mentre ampi e notevolissimi assoli prende anche il contrabbasso di Tavolazzi, assai più protagonista di quanto ci si poteva aspettare in un lavoro del genere.

Tra i brani spiccano in particolare "La danza del freddo," di Pratesi, "Lonely Woman," introdotta magistralmente da Liebman al flauto di legno, e "India," dove le doti espressive di Liebman emergono con particolare evidenza e Pratesi si esibisce al clarone.
