Rick Drumm and Fatty Necroses: Return from the Unknown

L'occasione per dare vita a questo album è certamente una cosa da non augurare a nessuno: il batterista Rick Drumm si è visto diagnosticare un linfoma e i suoi amici musicisti hanno deciso di raccogliersi attorno a lui per aiutarlo a superare questo momento poco piacevole. Ne è nata l'idea di registrare questo album, imperniato sul jazz-rock della fine degli anni sessanta, con le due chitarre di Fred Hamilton e Corey Christiansen in primo piano anche in virtù del fatto che si sono divisi più o meno equamente il compito di scrivere le nove composizioni dell'album.

Il riferimento sembra essere al Miles Davis di In a Silent Way, più che a quello di Bitches Brew. L'utilizzo di una sezione di fiati composta da sax, tromba e trombone fa venire in mente anche il gruppo di Herbie Hancock, all'epoca di Mwandishi e Crossings, pur senza averne mutuato la componente elettronica. La musica conserva una sua spontaneità di fondo che la rende piacevole e accattivante. I brani sono ben costruiti e con un bell'impatto ritmico, rotondo e scorrevole. Il piano elettrico del cubano Axel Tosca Laugart è degno di essere segnalato. In questo Return from the Unknown ritroviamo una vena di groove psichedelico di fondo che alimenta scenari mutevoli e organici. Scenari che fanno riferimento anche alla rivisitazione che negli ultimi dieci anni ha avuto il genere psichedelico con l'esplosione del fenomeno delle jam bands.
