The bag is not only mixed for this edition, but also vigorously shaken and stirred. Master pianist Pat Thomas & trio's The Day After, a must-listen recording, closes the show with a giant bang, but before that, eclecticism rules. You'll hear music from a couple of discoveries from the recent Vision Festival—pianist Hideki Akaiwa & Baltimore's powerful Konjur Collective—plus some recent finds from my own surfing: saxophonist Jimi Ahlroos from Finland, the Ancient Infinity Orchestra from Leeds, England, and the very unknown Roundtrip, a release by the late Don Cherry with electronics pioneer Jean Schwarz and an exceptional group of French musicians. German bassist Reza Askari and his ROAR ensemble continue to define a new path in free jazz, the bottom end sound of Bassism from Italy will impress, and as a preview to her next release, bassist Mali Obomsawin releases a sizzling track not included on her debut Sweet Tooth.
