Eivind Opsvik: Overseas IV

Overseas è il nome della band che il contrabbassista e compositore norvegese Eivind Opsvik fondò nel lontano 2002. Nel corso di dieci anni e quattro pubblicazioni Opsvik ha dato ampia testimonianza della sua evoluzione artistica e della sua capacità di coagulare attorno a questo progetto prestigiosi esponenti della scena prog-jazz newyorchese, esaltandone peculiarità non sempre esibite in altre situazioni. Struttura del lavoro e impatto sonoro sono decisamente cinematografici e non solo perché il disco è parzialmente ispirato al film di Sofia Coppola intitolato "Marie Antoinette". Vi è infatti in Overseas IV un susseguirsi di quadri, di immagini dalla forza descrittiva innegabile e dalla suggestiva enfasi poetica con rimandi ad epoche e stili musicali assai differenti tra di loro.

Echi di guerra, rullio di tamburi, luccichio di armi si scontrano con metal-blues alla Led Zeppelin e neo-romanticismo alla Emerson Lake & Palmer in una battaglia cha a tratti si fa epica. Opsvik è abile nell'allestire arrangiamenti in grado di coniugare momenti di grande intensità con altri più raccolti, intimisti, deliri visionari (da urlo il sax tenore di Malaby in "1786") con inquietanti, ossessive iterazioni. La presenza dell'harpsichord di Jacob Sacks contribuisce a creare contrasti stimolanti tra sequenze che sembrano pensate per allietare la corte di un virtuale Re Sole e scudisciate cariche di elettricità provenienti dalla chitarra di Brandon Seabrook, vero e proprio guastatore sonoro dell'incisione.

Intrigante.
