Reuben Hoch And Time: Of Recent Time

Scorrendo i titoli dei brani, saltano all'occhio brani e musicisti che hanno contribuito alla formazione musicale di ogni jazzofilo oggi quarantenne. Un spettro musicale piuttosto ampio, che abbraccia code di free ed echi rurali americani. Un songbook che, se ben sfruttato, rappresenta un ottimo punto di partenza per esplorazioni anche avventurose. A patto di averne il coraggio, la visionaria lucidità, i giusti compagni di viaggio. Essendo Reuben Hoch un batterista, è forse ingeneroso attribuirgli tutto il peso dell'estetica dell'album. In un trio con questa configurazione strumentale, è sicuramente il pianoforte lo strumento che dà la maggiore impronta. E però, essendo Hoch il leader, quantomeno gli si può attribuire una scelta dei musicisti tale da imprimere al trio una ben precisa direzione.

L'album, in sé, non ha niente di negativo. La scaletta dei brani è notevole, e sono ben suonati. Il problema è che manca qualunque elemento di sorpresa. I brani sono eseguiti proprio come ci si aspetta che li esegua un trio jazz. E la prevedibilità in musica, a nostro avviso, è sempre da fuggire.
