Joe Lovano: Streams of Expression
Dopo i primi due movimenti della suite "Streams of Expression" viene incastonata "The Birth of the Cool Suite", concepita, arrangiata e diretta da Gunther Schuller, che ha incluso tre brani dell'originario capolavoro davisiano: "Moon Dreams", "Move" e "Boplicity".
A parte questo esplicito riferimento al cool, tutto il CD sembra caratterizzarsi come un omaggio a quella corrente. Sembra cioè che Lovano abbia voluto rintracciare e prelevare, per poi tradurli nel proprio linguaggio, vari elementi tipici del cool, presenti, anche se in misura marginale, in autori che di quel movimento non furono i portabandiera: il Mingus californiano degli anni Quaranta, il primo Coleman, certe inflessioni di Dolphy o di Lacy...
Dello spirito del cool il sassofonista dà diverse interpretazioni: smooth, rilassata e notturna nelle parti iniziali di "Streams", per larga formazione, e di "Blue Sketches", in trio con Irwin e Nash; più dinamica, audacemente arrangiata, a volte aulica in tutti gli altri brani, con un episodio quasi sperimentale, di incalzante concitazione, in "The Fire Prophets". La voce strumentale di Lovano è sempre di una mobilità affascinante, sia al tenore che all'aulochrome, “il primo sassofono veramente polifonico e cromatico”. Creato da François Louis, esso abbina i corpi di due sax soprani tramite un ingegnoso meccanismo, che permette di azionare contemporaneamente le chiavi di entrambi, lungo l'intera estensione degli strumenti. Il risultato sonoro non è soltanto bizzarro, è del tutto convincente.
