Music With A View: Into The Evening

Compiled from Blues, Bop & Ballads, In Blue, Silent Pool, For Hamp, Red, Bags, and Cal, Sway, Bossa Nova Years, Soft And Mellow, Soul Sauce: Memories Of Cal Tjader, Blue Skies, Goodfellas, and Lotus Blossom, this program of lyrical ballads includes four “camera angles,” which portray different visual aspects of the setting of the sun – a daily ritual that we too often miss out on because of our busy schedules.

You can switch casually between “camera angles” during play. Each visual accompaniment is intended to offer you a bit of soothing pleasure in a different manner. While flying through the skies and over the sea, you absorb the warmth of the sun through still photos and filmed ventures. Time-lapse photography provides a different aspect for the album’s second choice. Artists’ easel conceptions of the early evening skies provide more intrigue, while “angle four” provides complete artist, album and recording information for the track that’s playing.

Concord has selected solo renditions as well as cohesive ensemble arrangements and full orchestra settings. The program includes Scott Hamilton’s lush tenor ballad, vocal interpretations by Peter Cincotti and Karrin Allyson, and a no-nonsense organ aria by Joey DeFrancesco. For those who haven’t heard Peter Cincotti yet, this title track from his album, Sway, provides an excellent introduction. “Poinciana Cha Cha” remains one of those classic arrangements that you just want to return to time and time again. Poncho Sanchez and Ruben Estrada honor the memory of Cal Tjader through a quiet storm of congas and vibes with band. Guitarists Kenny Burrell, Herb Ellis and Charlie Byrd each lead soft and mellow sessions from 1995, ‘78, and ‘91, respectively. Karrin Allyson’s “How Long Has This Been Going On?” seems as if the song were written specifically by George and Ira Gershwin for this time of the day. When the sun sets, the day is over, and it’s a time for reflection. It’s that time of the day when we put away our work tools and turn our attention to other things. Concord’s Into The Evening compilation provides both the music and the views for reliving such moments again and again.
