Jeff Fairbanks Project Hansori: Mulberry Street

Il trombonista Jeff Fairbanks, con questa imponente orchestra composta da una ventina di musicisti, parte occidentali, parte di origini orientali, cerca di trovare un punto di incontro fra le diverse sensibilità che rappresentano mondi separati. Lo fa con ottimi arrangiamenti, eccellenti musicisti e composizioni efficaci che si ispirano alle melodie folk asiatiche, mantenendo però una strutturazione armonica che deriva dal linguaggio del jazz moderno.

Quello che trent'anni fa poteva sembrare impossibile, si materializza ora con ottimi risultati di fronte a noi, forse aiutato in tutto questo dall'impollinazione ormai pervasiva che la globalizzazione sta assicurando al mondo, al di là delle singole volontà. Le influenze si fondono e si meticciano, come è giusto che sia. Del resto l'evoluzione è sempre passata per questi processi di fusione di diverse culture e mai nulla di veramente importante è arrivato dall'isolazionismo.

Fra i musicisti coinvolti si segnalano la contrabbassista Linda Oh, il baritonista Fred Ho, la pianista Francesca Han, il trombettista Jason Wiseman e il chitarrista Sebastian Noelle. A parte un paio di brani coreani sin dai titoli, tutte le composizioni sono state scritte da Jeff Fairbanks che le ha poi arrangiate per l'orchestra e le ha portate al debutto nel newyorkese Moldy Fig, un locale che a sua volta si sta lanciando nel difficile mondo dei jazz club.
