Steven Bernstein's Millennial Territory Orchestra: MTO Plays Sly
Date queste premesse, il mood complessivo dell'album non può essere che affettuoso. Qui non ci sono quegli stravolgimenti tipici di quando un jazzista affronta del materiale musicale. Per dire, la versione di "Family Affair" di Paul Weller è molto più distante dall'originale di quanto non lo sia questa di Bernstein (e a mio avviso anche più riuscita). Tuttavia ci sembra di capire che Bernstein non volesse appropriarsi della musica di Sly Stone per farne qualcos'altro. Molto più semplicemente (si fa per dire), Bernstein voleva suonare la musica di Sly Stone, festeggiarla e celebrarla in modo molto gioioso e rilassato (nella West Coast di qualche anno fa si sarebbe detto laid back). Con pochi momenti solistici, qualche divertissement (il banjo che introduce echi bluegrass), e ospitate illustri: l'organista ex Parliament-Funkadelic Bernie Worrell, il Living Colour Vernon Reid, il mago dei remix Bill Laswell.
Un album che scorre via piacevolmente, e che trova il suo culmine - grazie anche alla splendida voce di Martha Wainwright - in "Que Sera Sera".
