Depart: Mountain Messenger

Dopo un decennio di silenzio artistico i Depart, gruppo attivo a cavallo tra gli anni '80 e '90, è tornato in attività. La loro musica continua ad essere un mix di generi (ma non è fusion), tra il serio e l'ironico (e qui si rivela la comune esperienza di Känzig e Sokal all'interno della Vienna Art Orchestra dei bei tempi che furono), nella quale la tradizionale struttura jazzistica (esposizione del tema, soli, ripresa del tema) è abbandonata in favore di una più democratica ed interessante interazione/scambio di ruoli tra i membri del trio.

Energica ed a suo modo spensierata, la musica dei Depart trova i suoi momenti migliori nelle parti strutturate, o comunque in quei frammenti nei quali la vena dissacrante è tenuta a bada. L'ironia in musica è infatti arma pericolosa, da maneggiare con estrema cautela, a meno di non essere dei fenomeni (stiamo pensando, ad esempio, agli olandesi della Instant Composer). Stesso discorso vale per l'elettronica, strumento espressivo che solitamente i jazzisti utilizzano piuttosto male (ed i Depart non fanno eccezione) o forse, semplicemente, poco adatto al jazz.

E così, i brani migliori risultano essere quelli più "normali" (o se vogliamo, meno aderenti all'estetica del trio), come il traditional "Wenn min Schatz go fuetere goht" o la delicata brezza notturna della quinta traccia. Il resto dell'album è probabilmente più divertente da suonare che da ascoltare.
