Pete McCann: Most Folks

Dopo una cinquantina di incisioni da sideman con musicisti di tutti i tipi può anche risultare difficile costruirsi una propria precisa immagine o sentire l'esigenza di scrivere composizioni che abbiano un'identità riferibile ad uno stile ben definito. È quello che succede a Pete McCann, chitarrista molto eclettico che su Most Folks passa con disinvoltura dalla fusion alla chitarra acustica: sa di poterlo fare bene ed il resto del compito lo ha solo l'ascoltatore, a cui questo tipo di operazioni può piacere o meno.

I momenti notevoli non mancano, specie quando ci pensa il sassofonista John O`Gallagher a dare luce a quella che poteva diventare una session di esecuzioni belle ma senz'anima. È lui che in pratica tira su l'album spargendo emozioni nei suoi interventi solistici, con il leader che asseconda ottimamente, forte di una tecnica impeccabile. I momenti migliori sono quelli più orientati alla fusion (una grande "Yes, My Friend" e "JM" ispirata a John McLaughlin), ma poi altre esperienze ed idee ritornano prepotenti e l'album si sposta su coordinate più soffici in cui si sente il pianista Mike Holober.

Una miscela che dovrebbe apparire interessante a, come dice il titolo, tanta gente, e che forse è un modo come un altro di nascondere la mancanza di tempo per lavorare su una propria identità musicale quando si è costantemente richiesti per lavori in studio e tour.
