Sara Serpa: Mobile

Di questo lavoro della cantante portoghese Sara Serpa, collaboratrice fra gli altri di Greg Osby, Ran Blake e Danilo Perez, colpisce immediatamente - noi italiani, almeno - la citazione da Pavese presente in seconda di copertina. Praticamente ognuno dei dieci brani che compongono Mobile, del resto, ha un aggancio letterario, da Omero a Erodoto, da Melville a Steinbeck, a tutti gli altri, compreso l'Hugo Pratt di - guarda caso - "Corto". Fa eccezione il solo "Sum Razão," fado di Fernando Farinha e Alberto Correia interpretato anche dalla grande Amalia Rodrigues (il resto è tutto a firma della stessa Serpa, per lo più senza un testo esplicito).

È all'opera un quintetto di marcata impronta jazzistica, che si muove in un clima accogliente, pacato e partecipe. Ciò che magari emerge fin troppo precocemente è un certo qual senso di ripetitività, di maniera, di epidermicità. Le cose migliori arrivano così dall'iniziale "Sequoia Gigantis," da "Ahab's Lament" (ovviamente il rimando è al Moby Dick melvilliano), da "Tarveling with Kapuszinsky," in avvio per voce e chitarra sole, e poi innervato da un più libero contributo collettivo, e da "City of Light, City of Darkness," polivocale (in overdubbing) e di struttura finalmente più articolata, quindi epilogo senz'altro felice per un album dagli esiti magari non sempre impeccabili, ma comunque tutto sommato convincente se non proprio coinvolgente.
