About Me
Hilarious Disasters is a band formed in 2023 by Ukrainian pianist, improviser, composer, and journalist Kateryna Ziabliuk. The seemingly contradictory directions present on the band's music intertwine through free improvisation, like in a large sandbox, where the band has ample space for daring and witty experiments. This allows Hilarious Disasters to be a flexible group, open to change, which reinterprets its compositions over and over again during lively live performances, searching for new, fresh forms for them. The program was largely inspired by the leader's travels between Italy, Ukraine, and Poland over the past few years. Hence, there are such diverse elements as a suite about the hero of stories popular in southern Italy, the troublemaker Corto Maltese, reinterpretations of Slavic ritual folk songs, and songs inspired by the poetry of the Futurist period. The lyrical element, present in the song Nido (which includes a recitation of a fragment of a poem by Federico García Lorca), coexists seamlessly with jazz improvisations that confirm the extraordinary artistry and musical imagination of the entire band. All of the folk music on the album comes from Ukraine, specifically from the regions of Bukovina, Transcarpathia, and the vicinity of Lviv. The source is the private collection of my grandmother, ethnologist Nadia Ziabliuk. The field recordings for Corto Maltese were made at the Ballarò market in Palermo. Unnatural Root is Hilarious Disasters' debut album, released by Audio Cave. The compositions by Kateryna Ziabliuk, who wrote all the material, intertwine elements of various inspirations drawn from Ukrainian folk music, traditional and free jazz, metal and noise, complemented by the imaginative use of field recordings.
