Matt Wilson: Matt Wilson's Christmas Tree-O

Niente coretti sdolcinati di atmosfera natalizia, come il titolo e la grafica del CD lascerebbero supporre. Le quattordici tracce di questo Matt Wilson's Christmas Tree-O confermano quanto Matt Wilson sia uno dei jazzisti più duttili e zigzaganti dell'odierno panorama statunitense. Il suo trio è qui in cattedra per spiegare come e cosa dovrebbero essere il jazz e l'arte in genere: sfuggire dalle convenzioni, incamminarsi verso nuove strade, sorprendere con inattese soluzioni.

È un disco che pare richiamare alla perfezione l'idea di piacere estetico formulata qualche decennio fa da Claude Levi-Strauss. Nell'alludere tematicamente al caldo tepore del natale e al tempo stesso distanziandosene sul piano espressivo, le continue trovate del disco rispondono pienamente al sistema di attese messe in atto dall'ascoltatore curioso e così ben evocate dall'antropologo francese.

Nasce nel segno vociferante dello spirito ayleriano questo magnifico progetto, che vive di una ben precisa identità. In un percorso policentrico dove si rileggono mondi diversi (Lennon, Handel, Thornill, Ayler) per produrre invenzioni sorprendenti, il trio afferma e allo stesso smentisce l'assunto sonoro di base, ricorrendo a varie risorse: lo humor, la vena surrealista ed iconoclasta, il piglio sardonico improntato ad una vitale ritrasformazione. Vi predomina l'invenzione pura, visionaria ed imprevedibile, che si sviluppa nel segno di un'ottica deformata e deformante. Vi sono sonorità aspre ed inusitate rispetto alle orecchiabili melodie del natale, che colpiscono per la loro originalità contrastante e dissonante. Gran bel disco, da parte di un trio da seguire con attenzione.
