Al Foster Quartet: Love, Peace and Jazz!

Al Village Vanguard continuano ad essere prodotti dischi di grande livello, come nel caso di questo Love, Peace and Jazz! che ci butta nel mezzo di un'atmosfera live, ben registrata e con i musicisti che, a giudicare dalla precisione degli interventi, fanno come se fossero in studio.

Certo non mancano di esperienza, se si pensa che Al Foster ha suonato praticamente con tutti i grandi del jazz moderno e che il sassofonista israeliano Eli Degibri, per un periodo ha suonato nel gruppo di Herbie Hanckock. E proprio questa esperienza consente di evitare la trappola di un virtuosismo fine a se stesso e di una musica vuota, in cui risalta più la bravura degli esecutori che il resto.

Il quartetto è insieme dal '97, in giro fra un club e l'altro quando ce n'è la possibilità e sono rodati talmente bene che sono un esempio di perfezione esecutiva. Ma oltre l'aspetto tecnico c'è l'enorme rispetto per la musica e per gli ascoltatori insieme alla ricerca di un via per il jazz contemporaneo, che ha le sue basi nelle jazz modale.

Ogni brano è un gioiello di coerenza su cui si potrebbe discutere in un corso di guida all'ascolto. Tutti concentrati su quella che è l'esecuzione dei brani tirandone fuori il massimo, senza sbavature: ogni assolo una storia a sè senza gigionerie per compiacere il pubblico presente. Un disco insomma di alta qualità, che conferma Foster come uno dei grandi della batteria e questo quartetto una realtà funzionante ad alto livello.

Non poteva mancare l'assolo di batteria: su "Brandyn," quasi tre minuti prima di aprire la lunga esecuzione, gradevole pure per chi non suona lo strumento. Il resto è jazz da maestri.
