Adam Benjamin: Long Gone

Devo confessare che Long Gone mi ha sorpreso. Positivamente. Perché da Adam Benjamin, membro dei Kneebody, band guida della nuova onda statunitense, in bilico tra groove ipnotici, atmosfere psichedeliche, a proprio agio tra cavi e trasformatori, grandi estimatori del Davis elettrico, mi sarei aspettato di tutto tranne che un disco in piano solo. E per di più quasi completamente acustico!

Ma la forza di molti musicisti d'oltreoceano è proprio quella di non avere timore di spiazzare critici e ascoltatori, magari fans affezionati, con incursioni inaspettate in situazioni poco ipotizzabili, in dimensioni apparentemente lontane dalle proprie corde espressive. Ecco allora il nostro alle prese con la prova più ambita e temuta da ogni pianista che si rispetti, quella del piano solo, per l'appunto. E con che cosa ti incomincia? Con la coltraniana "Giant Steps," brano che fece ingarbugliare le dita perfino a Tommy Flanagan!

L'idea vincente di Long Gone sono gli occhi da bambino, lo sguardo innocente con il quale Benjamin affronta la sua avventura solitaria tra ricordi d'infanzia (Monk, Coleman, Coltrane), gli ascolti giovanili (Tears for Fears), i nuovi giganti del jazz (Mehldau, Metheny). Benjamin lavora per sottrazione, spogliando le composizioni da ogni ridondanza per arrivare ad un essenzialità naive, che non sfocia mai nel semplicistico grazie ad una sensibilità fuori dal comune.

Dopo nove standard ed un traditional, Benjamin chiude l'album con una propria composizione, effettuando un netto cambio di direzione. L'elettronica non è più un'appendice secondaria e, anche se permane un morbidezza di fondo, il brano suona molto metropolitano rivendicando a pieno titolo la contemporaneità della sua musica.

Lezione di stile e di coraggio.
