Bastano le prime battute di "Opening" per andare con il pensiero allo storico quartetto di Ornette Coleman e Don Cherry, che tanto scompiglio portò nel mondo del jazz agli inizi degli anni sessanta. Questi quattro giovanotti norvegesi non possono sconvolgere più di tanto un ring musicale che da anni è abituato ad ogni tipo di incontro con colpi bassi e anche proibiti, ma è indubbio che il loro Cortex Live! è un album consistente, ricco di energia, intensità e immediatezza comunicativa.

La lezione del free, ancorata agli stilemi del bop attualizzata e irrobustita da una palpabile varietà ritmica. Potremmo chiosare in questo modo la proposta musicale del quartetto. Kristoffer Berre Alberts si districa tra i sassofoni con grande personalità e disinvoltura (interessante il lavoro con il baritono), palesando una sottile predilezione per la melodia approcciata in modo sottilmente obliquo.

La cornetta di Thomas Johansson è naive quanto basta, talvolta un pizzico allucinata, sempre pronta ad allargare gli spazi e gli orizzonti delle esecuzioni. Il contrabbasso di Ola Hoyer e la batteria di Gard Nilssen alternano la fisicità del rock, groove funkeggianti ed elastiche scansioni più rigorosamente jazzistiche. Ricetta troppo semplice, con ingredienti sicuri a basso tasso di rischio? Può essere ma il quartetto sa bene come cucinare gli ingredienti a disposizione e presenta più di un momento di interesse per l'ascoltatore.
