Kris Davis: Grammy Winner And Musical Explorer

Click the play button to listen

Our guest is Kris Davis, Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist, composer and bandleader, who released the acclaimed recording Run the Gauntlet in 2024, with her superb trio featuring bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Johnathan Blake. Davis has released 26 recordings as a leader or co-leader and collaborated with artists such as Terri Lyne Carrington, Dave Holland, John Zorn, Craig Taborn, Ingrid Laubrock, Tyshawn Sorey and Esperanza Spalding. She was named a 2021 Doris Duke Artist, alongside Wayne Shorter and Danilo Pérez, Pianist of the Year by DownBeat magazine in 2020, 2022 and 2025, and Pianist and Composer of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association in 2021.

Davis will release Lost in Geneva in September 2026, which alludes to the ordeal of the traveling musician. Davis' trio incorporates sounds and musical statements relating to the jarring disorientation and dislocating impact of touring, the ever-present jet lag, tight deadlines and inevitable exhaustion. It is an overlooked aspect of musical life that Davis elaborates upon.

We also listen to two cuts from Run the Gauntlet: the title cut and "Coda Queen"
