For Free Hands: Kaleidoscope Freedom

Due bulgari, un tedesco e un greco compongono questo quartetto, che parla molto di lìbertà (nel suo nome, nel titolo stesso del disco) ma poi in realtà pratica un jazz alquanto prudente, aconflittuale, calato in una tradizione moderno-contemporanea largamente collaudata non esente da inflessioni country-rock.

I temi sono tutti a firma del chitarrista Andreas Brunn, leader del gruppo, e prediligono tinte aperte e colloquiali, qua e là persino easy, senza peraltro mai abbandonare i canoni di un assoluto buon gusto, di un'eleganza magari un po' esteriore ma comunque apprezzabile (si prenda ad esempio un brano come "Everything Flows"), mentre altrove più palpabile è una matrice post-boppistica aggiornata (gli esempi migliori sono in tal senso "Blood and Honey," "Kaleidoscope Freedom" e soprattutto "Dracula's Breakfast," che non manca di sviluppi più astratti, quasi informali).

In definitiva un onestissimo album di medio cabotaggio capace di farsi ascoltare senza soprassalti di sorta ma senza per questo peccare di eccessiva genericità, se non episodicamente.
