John Hollenbeck, Michael Attias & Nordic Artists

Click the play button to listen

This show has a bit of wanderlust. It starts and closes with music by artists from Scandinavia (an all-star band honouring the music and spirit of Albert Ayler, then at the end a new Norwegian/Swedish quartet called Unionen followed by Nacka Forum celebrating its 25th year and the closer by the Finnish trio Hot Heros). The late trumpeter Dennis Gonzalez loved to take his horn all over the world, and that's the plan for his two sons with their newly-formed Dennis Gonzalez Legacy Band. Master drummer John Hollenbeck traveled to Germany to lead a percussion quartet in the midst of the powerful NDR Big Band, while pianist D.D. Jackson decided to go back to his home country of Canada to make his first album in several years. Saxophonist Francisco Pacha Davila left Colombia and found himself making Illusions And Lamentations with a powerful rhythm section in Lisbon, but England's saxophone legend Paul Dunmall decided to stay home in Birmingham and recorded Red Hot Ice with local improvisers. Other new sounds from saxophonist Michael Attias, pianist Sylvie Courvoisier solo, the German mighty three-member Insomnia Brass Band}}, and alto saxophonist Caleb Wheeler Curtis' double album.
