Plunge: IN For The OUT
A capo del gruppo Plunge, il trombonista Mark McGrain è uno dei protagonisti del jazz a New Orleans nel decennio post Katrina.
Dopo il debutto nel 1995 (Falling with Grace, Accurate Records) in un organico comprendete Bob Moses alla batteria, Avishai Cohen al contrabbasso e Marcus Rojas alla tuba, il trombonista ha ricostituito il gruppo qualche anno fa con il sassofonista Tim Green e il bassista James Singleton presentando l'acclamato Dancing On Thin Ice (Immersion Records, 2009).

Questo terzo lavoro sembra voler raccogliere lo spirito dei lavori precedenti e accosta il funk e l'enfasi da brass band del primo disco con l'approccio sperimentale del secondo. Al trio con Green e Singleton si aggiungono quindi un altro sassofonista (Tom Fitzpatrick), il notevole solista di sousaphone Kirk Joseph, l'organista Robert Walter e il batterista Simon Lott.
Dopo i primi tre brani caratterizzati da un contagioso street-beat e poderosi assoli in sequenza le cose iniziano a cambiare con "Falling with Grace" (un esempio dell'abilità di McGrain a produrre multifonici), con il successivo "The Speed of Darkness" (una tumultuosa sequenza free con la batteria protagonista) per raggiungere la punta sperimentalmente più alta con la "Entropy Suite," un cameristico interplay improvvisato in quattro parti, in situazioni che spaziano dal trio base (trombone, basso e batteria) al confronto batteria/saxello. Quasi a raffigurare un netto passaggio dal crepuscolo all'abbagliante luce solare, a questi brani si alternano con i momenti esuberanti di cui s'è detto, in un percorso a due facce ispirato e ricco di ottima musica.
