Aa.Vv.: Ililta, New Ethiopian Dance Music

La straordinaria forza della musica etiopica tra la fine degli anni Sessanta e la metà del decennio successivo non può lasciare indifferente l'ascoltatore che vi si accosti, così come testimonia il grande successo della serie "Ethiopiques" curata da Francis Falceto. Come però gli appassionati sanno, la dittatura militare nel paese pose fine alla "swinging Addis" e alcuni dei principali musicisti tornarono nell'ombra o furono costretti a emigrare.

Arrivarono gli anni Ottanta, periodo nel quale la musica pop trovò nei suoni delle tastiere e delle batterie elettroniche gli strumenti per una produzione massificata e di livello mediamente basso già in Occidente, figuriamoci in Etiopia! Le cose hanno incominciato a andare meglio però nell'ultimo decennio, con una sempre maggiore apertura e circolazione di idee musicali: così come Either/Orchestra (Live in Addis), The Ex (Moa Anbessa e il recente DVD insieme a Getatchew Mekuria) e molti musicisti occidentali hanno potuto scoprire e confrontarsi con i musicisti locali, anche i ritmi più nuovi hanno iniziato a fare breccia nel cuore dei produttori etiopi, che hanno così potuto elaborare nuovi progetti nei quali la ricchezza della tradizione si incontra con la musica da ballo occidentale.

A questa scena si rivolge Ililta, New Ethiopian Dance Music, la raccolta della Terp che si scrolla un po' di dosso il mood da "operazione nostalgia" di molte [pur strepitose] produzioni e raccoglie così alcune delle produzioni più recenti della nuova scena dance. Produttore delle undici tracce raccolte è il "guru" Mesele Asmamaw e copre un periodo tra il 1997 e il 2007, mescolando i ritmi popolari di gurage, wollo, gondar, oromo con nuovi beats.

Non ci si aspetti però un meticciato sottile e vagamente space-age come quello operato dagli Heliocentrics nel bellissimo disco con Mulatu Astatqe, Inspiration Information: il dancefloor evocato è sempre molto africano e in qualche modo abbastanza crudo, ma funziona ottimamente ed è, nel caso di "Desse Lay," impreziosito dalla voce dell'indimenticato Mohammed Jimmy Mohammed. Si balla!
