Steve Coleman and Five Elements: Harvesting Semblances and Affinities
Fin dal brano iniziale, l'alto-sassofonista mescola creativamente i canonici tempi pari del jazz con una mistica cadenza numerologica d'ascendenza medievale, imperniata sul numero 3. In tre si contano i ritmi Yoruba ed Orisha di questo brano, per partire lungo un affascinante viaggio nel tempo e nello spazio che tocca l'eredità africana del Brasile fino a congiungersi con la spiritualità dell'Europa cristiana medievale.
A sostenere il tutto, fluttuanti microcellule armoniche e ritmiche per esaltare lo straordinario affiatamento di questo straordinario sestetto, capace di stagliarsi ancora una volta ai vertici assoluti del jazz contemporaneo. Una formazione che impegna insieme la mente ed il corpo dell'ascoltatore con contagiose trame danzanti, sprigionando un'energia ed una carica emotiva raramente riscontrabile nel jazz odierno. I sette brani in scaletta mettono in mostra la sapiente ricercatezza d'arrangiamento del leader, che guarda a Mingus come principale modello d'organizzazione sonora.
La musica lievita via via in una esaltante girandola di soluzioni mai prevedibili, finendo con il valorizzare tutte le belle individualità del gruppo. L'ampio affresco proposto trova ovviamente la sua voce guida nello spigoloso contralto del leader, magnificamente complementare al timbro scuro del trombonista Tim Albright e gli squarci più solari del trombettista Jonathan Finlayson.
Perdersi nell'ascolto di gruppi così eccelsi e comunicativi è oggi un'esperienza quanto mai rara.
