Bill Frisell: Guitar in the Space Age!
Ma lungi dal caricarsi di valenze sociopolitiche e militanti, quella intrapresa da Frisell è un'operazione che viaggia sui binari della nostalgia. L'impressione è che il chitarrista di Baltimora si limiti a spolverare i gioielli di famiglia per riportarli agli antichi splendori ed esibirli orgogliosamente ad amici e parenti. A qualcuno viene modificata leggermente la disposizione, a qualcun altro viene ritoccato qualche pezzo usurato dal tempo ma sostanzialmente tutto rimane immutato e pronto ad essere riposto nuovamente nel cassetto.
Certo la solita leggerezza e sensibilità nell'affrontare le composizioni altrui rimane immutata, gli intrecci con la steel guitar di Greg Leisz sono a tratti intriganti, la batteria di Kenny Wollesen e il basso di Tony Scherr sono una garanzia ma il tutto tende a suonare (involontariamente, ne siamo sicuri) come un esercizio di stile nel quale le vere emozioni sono centellinate, e i ricordi di un epoca faticano a prendere forma e consistenza. Diversi brani scivolano via troppo velocemente, e non bastano la frizzante "Turn, Turn, Turn," l'epica "Tired of Waiting for You" del grande Ray Davies, o la sognante "Surfer Girl" a collocare questo lavoro tra le cose più riuscite di Frisell.
