Getting Blocked? Try this; Andy Wasserman and George Russell; Kenny Dorham; Concert Coverage; and Songs of the Week

As we continue fine-tuning the balance between blocking malicious bot traffic and allowing legitimate access, many readers have experienced temporary blocks. If you can't access All About Jazz, don't worry—we've included a quick solution below to regain access.

Also, if you use the All About Jazz app and the interface currently looks jumbled, please delete it then re-add it. This will clear cache and restore its appearance. We explain how to add the app here. The next version of the AAJ and JNY apps will auto-clear cache.

Getting blocked?

Last week, I shared an update about website security and the steps we're taking to protect All About Jazz from malicious bots and hacking activity.

As part of this effort, some readers—and even staff—have occasionally encountered a Cloudflare "Sorry, you have been blocked" message. This doesn't mean anything is wrong with your account. It simply means Cloudflare temporarily flagged an action as suspicious.

I encountered this very same error myself, so you're not alone.

The block can be browser-specific—for example, you might be blocked in Safari but still have access in Chrome or another browser.

If you see this message, the quickest fix is to clear your browser's cache completely and then return to All About Jazz. In most cases, access is immediately restored.

We're actively monitoring the situation and fine-tuning our settings to reduce these interruptions while keeping the site secure. Thanks for your patience as we work through this.

Kenny Dorham: The Composer in the Horn

In jazz, a musician's sound is often discussed as if it were separate from the music on the page. With Kenny Dorham, the compositions tell the story as clearly as the trumpet does. Across the recordings made between '53 and '64, Dorham's originals trace a steady shift: from compact bebop logic to a leaner, more spacious language shaped by Afro-Cuban rhythm, blues economy and the emerging post-bop emphasis on melodic clarity. The list that follows is built on a simple organizing principle—first recording dates rather than release dates—so the music can be heard in the order Dorham put it into the air, with the historical record kept intact. The Living Lineage of the Lydian Chromatic Concept

Few theoretical works have altered the course of modern jazz as profoundly as George Russell's Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization. Fewer still have had their legacy preserved with the depth of care, fidelity, and lived musicianship that Andy Wasserman has devoted to it for more than four decades. For over 40 years, Wasserman has been one of the Concept's foremost teachers and practitioners. In an era when "jazz theory" is often reduced to a toolkit of scales and substitutions, Wasserman stands as a rare example of true lineage: a professional musician with more than half a century on the bandstand and in the studio, a multi-instrumentalist fluent on over 60+ instruments, and one of a very small number of musicians personally certified by Russell to teach the Lydian Chromatic Concept in its entirety. Terence Blanchard & Ravi Coltrane: Miles Davis & John Coltrane Centennial at UMS

How fitting that jazz titans Miles Davis and John Coltrane were both born in 1926. As the centennial of their births is celebrated across the country, tributes have taken many forms. Trumpeter Terence Blanchard has joined forces with saxophonist Ravi Coltrane for a series of commemorative performances, launching the collaboration at Hill Auditoriumon the campus of the University of Michigan. The appearance marked Blanchard's debut under the auspices of the University Musical Society, while Coltrane had previously stood on the same stage in 2006 alongside his mother, Alice Coltrane. From the outset, it was clear that this was largely Blanchard's conceptual vehicle. His ensemble, The E-Collective, operates in a distinctly electric and stylistically hybrid space.
