The David Fink Quartet: Future Day

Sotto la guida del contrabbassita David Finck, abbastanza noto per la sua attività di sideman di lusso in gruppi jazz e pop, il quartetto composto da Joe Locke al vibrafono, Tom Ranier al piano e Joe Locke al vibrafono, si mostra a proprio agio nell�'interpretazione di standard famosi e di qualche original. In due brani il quartetto viene arricchito dagli interventi del trombettista Jeremy Pelt e del sassofonista Andy Sheppard. Da musicisti di tale statura - Joe La Barbera è stato il batterista dell�'ultimo trio di Bill Evans, tanto per citarne uno - ci si aspetta un disco di alto livello, e questo Future Day non delude.

"Appointment in Orvieto" è un accenno all�'Italia dove Joe Locke spesso suona, con un assolo mozza-fiato. Un pò come in tutto l�'album, dove si celebra un mainstream di valore, innestato nella tradizione e con una bella comunicatività.

Per questi musicisti non esistono difficoltà di interpretazione, che siano ballad o brani dall�'andamento più mosso. Qualcuno troverà le loro esecuzioni un po' prevedibili, ma sono solo questioni di gusto. Un paio di brani, tipo "Nature Boy" o "Firm Roots" di Cedar Walton mettono in evidenza le loro caratteristiche di musicisti fluidi, che usano la padronanza dei loro strumenti al servizio dei brani scelti, così da far apparire ovunque un tappeto di deliziosa musicalità.
