Ken Vandermark - Barry Guy - Mark Sanders: Fox Fire
Accanto a progetti ritmicamente più caratterizzati, eccolo anche protagonista di lavori di pura e libera improvvisazione, come in questo trio "inglese" con il contrabbasso di Barry Guy e la batteria di Mark Sanders, registrato nel novembre 2008 a Birmingham e Leeds e ora pubblicato in un doppio CD.
Improvvisazione libera, cioè governata da regole variabili e negoziate al momento, di cui i tre sono veri maestri: sono energie sonore, flussi, che possono risolversi nell'arco di pochi minuti oppure - più frequentemente - dilatarsi in spazi e tempi ricchi di dettagli e di livelli espressivi. I due set esplorano zone emotive differenti, spesso ostiche, con frizioni tra gli strumenti e ruvide traiettorie melodiche, ma anche, specialmente quando Vandermark è al clarinetto, con una particolare attenzione allo sviluppo timbrico dell'interazione.
Tutti bravissimi, tutto tanto interessante quanto un po' difficoltoso all'ascolto se non si è in sintonia: gli appassionati di improvvisazione lo sanno bene e sanno anche quando e come sintonizzarsi. A tutti gli altri il consiglio di approcciare questo trio prima dal vivo.
